Shrove Tuesday

Tomorrow is the start of Lent, today I will make a big batch of batter and tonight we will have pancakes galore...then no more eggs till Easter!! (Well that's the theory... the best I've ever managed is no more pancakes till Easter!!) Despite gloomy weather here yesterday spring is definitely on its way, the mornings are lighter and the evenings longer... Snowdrops, daffodils and primroses are making brave appearances and the birds are singing happily - warmer weather can't be too far away!

Yesterday I bought a new bathroom suite and a load of tiles for the bathrooom and toilet, they won't be delivered for a few weeks... but the end is in sight - no more brown carpet, no more turquoise toilet! - yay!

In other news David went to see a friend's band play in Liverpool last night, on the way home some other youths attacked one of David's friends and he ended up at the hospital (no serious injuries thankfully), so we are expecting the police to call today as David was the main witness to the incident! - I hope they don't call too early, the boys are all still fast asleep, and I'm still in my dressing gown...!!

Oh, that's an awful thing for David to witness. I hope he's okay.

A turquoise toilet sounds absolutely foul!!! How old is it? Yikes!

Is it really no eggs until Easter? I didn't know that. What if you need to bake?

David seems okay this morning, his biggest problem seems to be the questions about logarithms that he has been set for maths homework - so that's okay!!

The turquoise toilet (and bath and wash basin) are all truly awful - and at least 20 years old!!! - definitely ready for a change!!

As for eggs, the reason they had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday was to use up all the rich food you had in your larder which you were supposed to abstain from during Lent...Then you could eat eggs again on Easter Day to celebrate the resurrection, hence Easter Eggs. The closest we get to this is that I generally won't let any one eat chocolate eggs till Easter Day - not even those tempting Cadbury cream eggs which are my favourite!!

Thanks for all the info there.

OMG I loooooove those Cadbury cream eggs! Can you get them over there? I try not to let anyone eat Easter eggs before Easter too, but they are already on sale at The Warehouse!

Yes you can get Cadbury cream eggs here...they appeared in the shops here before they'd cleared the Christmas decorations away!! - sigh!

At least....
At least I can be thankful that I don't actually like Cadbury Creme Eggs. I find them ever so sickly and too much sugar in them for me. Still, I am sure there will be lots of other Easter foods to tempt me. Still 40 days left until then though, and 7 weigh days to fit in.

Re: At least....
I've always loved Creme eggs - I shall have one (or two!) on Easter Day, but first I have to eat my way through birthday food this weekend!!!

OMG!!! I don't think they should be in the shops until Palm Sunday!

I'm right with you there, I think our celebrations are far more meaningful when they aren't previewed for months before by the shops!

Exactly! Once again, commercialism is taking the beauty out of a celebration that actually means a lot to some of us.

I like the Grinch story for that, take away all the trimmings and we still have something to celebrate!!

Glad David was OK and hope the other lad will be home soon. I remember that happening to one of Gail's friends and all the parents did a lot of extra chauffeuring/fussing for ages - which restricts older teen freedom but saves lives and limbs. The bottom line rule was that nobody went home alone, however much organising was needed - even only a street or two.

The other boy is home and okay, he and David were walking together, with a group of girls too. When they passed a group of rather abusive youths the girls ran on ahead, David just kept walking trying to ignore them, and suddenly realised that Callum wasn't beside him any more, when he turned to see what had happened Callum was already on the ground, he had been attacked from behind by 4 others using a traffic cone to hit him! As I said there was no serious injury, just shock and blood!

I don't really worry about people walking at night, I do walk around a lot in the evenings, and I do know that this sort of thing happens, I believe in being sensible, staying where there are both light and people, but I don't think we should live in fear...

Some friends of ours were walking through Romiley and a gang of teenagers pushed the husband so that he fell, almost into the road. His biggest fear was that his wife would attack the attackers and be assaulted in turn! Yet we still walk through Romiley without fear. Although I might cross the road if I saw a big teenage gang approaching.
