Jan. 31st, 2006

Overall it's been a rather quiet day when I haven't done much or been any where. I did start working on my website, but it's still a long way from appearing on the web, I also finished my kiwi icons thing tonightwhile we were watching yet another episode of Morse, so here it is for any one who's interested.

Ian will be up early in the morning to go the men's prayer breakfast up at church, and I still have lots of laundry to sort, but our life doesn;t seem to be incredibly dynamic this week. Still it's February tomorrow and there are lots of things happening this month, a mission weekend at church including the internastional supper, our trip to Florence and Pisa at half term and my 40th birthday, so there won't be much time to get bored!

I love the work you have done, I really do, and that's from a true Kiwi!

And Florence and Pisa? OMGOMG! Wowee!

We're going to Florence and Pisa for half term, it's my big birthday present. I last went there when I was 21, just before we got married. A friend and I went interrailing all round Europe, but of all the amazing places we visited Italy was my favourite, beautiful, busy and relaxed at the same time and just full of history. It was in Italy that I first really enjoyed looking at art, and i've always longed to go back. Rome is probably more exciting, and Venice is probably more romantic, and I'd like to visit them again too, but I loved Florence and am looking forward to seeing it again.

I'm really pleased with the kiwi icons, I think they'll look good in the middle of the table, I've bought green tablecloths as a background and we'll put paua shells and other things round the edge.

That is one shit hot birthday present!!!

I bet it'll perk up your art no end, too! I can't wait to see what you paint after that.

And the table sounds great! I might try some themed tables for the children at home some nights, just for fun! On a minor scale of course.

Well he asked me what I wanted, so I told him, and he booked it. Works for me!!

But I'm hoping it will be fun for everyone, the others have never been to Italy before, and it's really not that expensive to visit Europe from here, it's only a 2 hour flight from London to Pisa. Now I need an Italian icon!

A two hour flight? Oh my. There had to be extra benefits for going back to the UK, hadn't there.

Yes and being close to Europe is definitely one of them, Chris has a school trip to France and Matthew is going to Poland on a history trip. Mum wants me to go on a holiday to the lakes in Switzerland too! Lucky us!! All before the end of May!!

Oh that's so amazing. Imagine, the best we can do is a few hours and we're in Australia! Or if we're desperate for a change in culture, the South Island LOL!

I know, I always found New Zealand's physical isolation a bit hard in travel terms, you have to go so far to be anywhere, don't forget the Pacific Islands though, you can always go to Rarotonga or Apia they're not too far!

But having Europe on your doorstep is certainly an advantage which I hope to make the most of, any way I've got a quick Italian icon now, the Duomo in Florence, photo taken 19 years ago!

Yeah, right! *snort* Our friends went to Apia for their last holiday and were burgled in the night! Ruth lost her wallet. Her husband thought there was a dog in the room, and it turned out to be a man crawling along the floor beside his bed!

And one of the teachers from school went to Samoa for a wedding, only to find a whole family from school were going to be at the very next village!

So what's wrong with the Islands, don't forget we lived there for 3 and a half years and Matthew was born there so almost classes as an islander!

Seriously though we did have a few problems with petty crime there, the coke that was stolen from our kitchen over night, or the coffee, or the money that was stolen from our bedside table while we slept, more than once! Or there was the time I met a guy with a big knife in my hallway.

See? That's a good reason to save up for Europe! Or at least Aussie!

...or Toronto *g*

Despite all the problems I would go back to the islands any time, for a holiday, or even to live, our time there was very happy, but I did miss the history of busy, crowded Europe, sometimes I missed there being lots of people too, not always but sometimes, you see I'm a big city girl at heart!

I like the city too, but I'd love to have a reason to try and live in the country for a year. A writing sabbatical perhaps!

To be any where for a year is too long for me, I mean, I can live in a place for quite a while, but I have to be able to visit other places too, in Vanuatu I used to long for our leave trips, not because I wasn't happy were I was, but just because I long for novelty. I'm one of those people who always wants to know what's on the other side of the wall, what it's like over the hill and to see the land on the other side of the sea.

I love to travel, see new places and new things, to hear new sounds, to taste new foods and smell new scents. I love all the places I have been and would happily go back to most, but I so much want to go to new places too. I feel I will never have enough days to experience all the places I'd like to, (not enough money either, but even if money weren't an issue!)
