Today we took the train to Salzburg. This was the first trip to Austria for Ian and the boys, but I was last in Salzburg twenty years ago... it hadn't changed much except that there were a lot more internet cafes than I remember back then!!

We walked through the lovely Mirabellgarten

Then we headed to the Dom. Before we went in we took a ride in a horse carriage which included

After the dom we headed upto Festung Hohensalzburg (The castle on the hill) by funicular. This affords great views of the city and is an interesting structure in itself

In the castle

We also visited St Peter's and the catacombs, and a number of souvenir shops...

The weather through out the day was gloriously hot and sunny. I do wonder if I should be worried about Chris's obsession with ice cream though!!!

Lovely!! Been there, done that,(three times) and don't have any photos on the computer! I adore the Salzburg castle - it gives me a real feeling about how castles must have been when most of the local population lived and worked within the walls. I think it figures to some extent in most of the mental images I have of castles in fantasy books!

It is lovely isn't it? Every bit as good as I remembered it! The castle brought to mind Minas Tirith, because it has levels within levels!

Those multi-layered European castles (Salzburg, Colditz etc) are the castles of Tolkien and other fantasy writers. Our rugged keeps are what I visualise when I read historical novels!! And yet the Euro-castles are just as old!
